Case Study: Site Hoarding for Nobu at Viadux 2, with DOMIS and Salboy
When Salboy and DOMIS broke ground on Viadux 2, they needed hoarding that matched the scale of the project. At 76 storeys and 246 metres, the £360m tower on Albion Street will be the UK’s tallest building outside London, home to Manchester’s first Nobu hotel and restaurant alongside 452 apartments. A site like that sits in full view of the city, so the hoarding around it is doing brand work for four names at once: Nobu, Salboy, DOMIS and Betfred.
We printed and installed 62 linear metres of 2 metre high hoarding running beneath the Victorian railway arches, made up of over 62 individual boards, combining full colour printed panels and art deco patterned mirror gold sections to match the Nobu brand. Mirror gold is a material most sign companies won’t take on, because you can’t print directly onto a mirrored surface: the ink has nothing to bond to and the finish distorts whatever you put over it.
Our large format printers lay down a white underlayer first, giving the art deco pattern a solid base to print onto while the mirror gold shines through everywhere else. On a finish where every panel joint and fixing shows, it takes the right equipment and a precise hand to get a clean result. Every printed panel was also protected with anti graffiti laminate, so tags and paint wipe off without damaging the print underneath, which matters on a hoarding that has to look sharp for the full duration of the build. All of it was fabricated in our Middleton workshop and installed by our own team, giving the site a frontage that looks closer to a luxury shop front than a building site.
